History was made Tuesday as 13 women graduated from the FDNY Training Academy in East New York.
The graduation ceremony consisted of one of the department’s biggest female classes.
Graduates reminisced on their motives for becoming firefighters and how they will help the community as their families gathered to celebrate their achievement.
Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanaugh emphasized that she was honored to attend the graduation and commencement on International Women's Day.
Kavanaugh added that she hopes to see more classes like this in the near future, that are diverse and led with women. She told the women graduates they're setting the bar for girls that never knew they could be firefighters.
The FDNY will now consist of a total of 134 female firefighters.
