A 40-year-old woman was killed Tuesday in an early morning fire, fire officials say.
The woman was believed to be a squatter, says the FDNY.
They say she was living in the basement and alleyway between 1237 and 1241 67th streets. Neighbors say they were saddened by this news, but not surprised.
The FDNY says this was the sixth fire at the same address within the past two years.
Firefighters say the cold weather made the fire more difficult to put out, although wind was not an issue.
Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and were sent to the hospital from the scene.
No other civilians were hurt, although 16 were displaced. The Red Cross says it is currently helping out 10 adults and six children who cannot return home tonight.
The Department of Buildings placed an active vacate order on 1237 67th St., as it is still inspecting the building's structural stability.
