Tenants at Boulevard Houses in East New York were forced to evacuate their building after a neighbor apparently turned the gas on in her apartment Tuesday morning.
Neighbors say the incident unfolded at about 6 a.m. after a third-floor resident barricaded herself inside her apartment. At that point, tenants reported smelling gas.
One of the tenants, Sherrell Johnson, said the woman repeatedly banged on the door while screaming and hollering. She was later seen fighting in the hallway with nobody, Johnson recalled.Police called to the scene placed two airbags outside the building in case the woman decided to jump.
The woman, whose name has not been disclosed, later surrendered. She was wheeled out of the building accompanied by the NYPD Emergency Services Unit.
Many neighbors say they were concerned for their own safety and for the safety of the woman throughout the ordeal.
