Federal lawmakers visited city schools Tuesday to possibly borrow elements of recent reforms for use at the federal level.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein greeted the officials and showed them the ins and outs of New York City public education at P.S. 133.

House Education Committee Chair Rep. George Miller (D-CA) says New York City schools represent cutting edge improvements in education with their high standards, high accountability and incentives to help children learn.

Bloomberg says P.S. 133 is an important example of the city?s accountability system. Once troubled, the school got a ?B? on the school progress reports that measure improvement in students? scores.

The federal officials say similar grading systems, with some tweaks, may be used in all 50 states. They are also looking into the city?s bonus program as a possible national template. The program offers cash incentives to educators in high-need schools.
