A mixed martial arts gym in Williamsburg is hosting a tournament where 30 people from around the world are competing in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
All of the competitors overcame some type of physical disability to master jiu-jitsu. The people who participated have disablities that range from cerebral palsy, to spinal cord injuries, to amputations.
An orthapedic surgeon founded the Grapplers Heart organization a year ago to help people with disabilities.
The two-day event will continue on Sunday, and while it marks the first tournament for Grapplers Heart, organizers say they plan to make it an annual event.
