Mothers who lost their children to gun violence are sharing their heartbreaking stories in a new documentary from a local film director.
In "Our Mothers Voices," women open up about the pain of losing their children or grandchildren. Laura Walker, who lost her grandson in Coney Island in 2010, is among those featured.
Director Jeffrey Morton started working on the film more than two years ago with the help of community donations. The Coney Island native says it's a subject that hits close to home because he lost a good friend 20 years ago.
The mothers in the film are from across the city, but their stories are all tragically similar in that they could have been prevented. Activists hope the documentary will serve as a platform to end gun violence not only in New York City, but also in America.
The premiere will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Liberation High School. Morton is hoping it will be featured in film festivals nationwide after that.
