Final swipe: MetroCard era ends as OMNY takes over

It’s officially the end of an era for New York City riders.

Wednesday marks the final day to buy or reload a MetroCard, as the MTA fully transitions to OMNY’s tap-and-go payment system. While MetroCards with remaining balances will still work into 2026, no new cards or reloads will be available after New Year's Eve.

For many riders, using OMNY instead of swiping was an easy transition. Others say it took some getting used to, but the upgrade eventually stuck.
