Crews returned to JD Automotive and Truck in Dover on Monday after a fire reignited at the auto repair shop.
The fire started Sunday night, with witnesses saying the flames shot 40 feet into the air.
JD Automotive and Truck is owned by Dover Mayor James Dodd, according to the prosecutor's office.
The mayor has sparked controversy for his reported efforts to eliminate the positions of both fire and police chiefs to bring in a public safety director instead.
Tow trucks and demolition crews were on standby as investigators from the Morris County Sheriff's Bomb Squad and Prosecutor's Arson Unit searched through the debris.
Mike Stalter, of Randolph, said they plan to move cars and expect the building to be taken down.
No one was inside at the time of the original fire, and no injuries have been reported.
