An overnight fire destroyed apartments and an adjacent bodega Saturday morning around 3 a.m. in Park Slope, leaving several families homeless.
Fire officials say the blaze broke out in the basement of the building and quickly spread up. Although the cause of the fire was initially investigated as suspicious, firefighters have determined the cause was old wiring in the basement.
Firefighters fought to contain the flames to the lower floors. No injuries were reported among those who live and work in the buildings, though five firefighters were injured fighting the blaze. The Red Cross was on hand to help victims find shelter and provide them with food and clothing.
