A two-alarm fire ripped through a 4-story building in Bed Stuy on Monday, destroying several businesses and leaving multiple tenants without a home.
The FDNY said the fire broke out shortly after 1:30 p.m. at 1515 Fulton St., located near Throop Avenue.
FDNY Deputy Chief Patrick Sheridan told News 12 that the fire started in the clothing store on the ground floor, but back behind the neighboring cellphone shop that shared the same unit.
The fire extended to the apartment above. All three apartments on top of the storefront had to be evacuated.
The FDNY said more than 140 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene. The department says it took a little over an hour to get the flames under control.
The business owners were too distraught to speak with News 12 on camera, but the neighbors next door described what they saw.
“We look out the window, and it was bad,” said Pam Pena, of Bed Stuy. “We couldn't see anything, so we ran out and it was straight up black smoke outside.”
“I heard, like, an alarm,” said Farbej Alam, of Bed Stuy. “So, after my friend told me the fire is coming. Then, everybody’s come out.”
The FDNY said no one was hurt. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Red Cross was on the scene to help tenants in need of emergency assistance.
