A fire destroyed a first-floor apartment in Prospect Lefferts Gardens Saturday morning and forced a tenant to leap out of a window to safety.
Firefighters say flames broke out inside a first-floor apartment on Rutland Road and quickly spread. It took about 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
A woman who was trapped on the top floor was forced to jump down to safety because the fire company?s ladder could not reach her. In addition, two firefighters were injured while battling the flames.
Those displaced by the fire were given temporary shelter at the Church of God Prophecy. The Red Cross was also on hand to set up overnight stays at local hotels for the residents. The woman who jumped to safety was taken to Kings County Hospital, and the injured firefighters were treated at the hospital and released.
