A late-night apartment fire in Flatbush has left one man dead and another person injured, according to the FDNY.
It happened Wednesday night inside a six-story apartment building on Lenox Road, between Flatbush and Bedford avenues.
The FDNY says the fire started just after 10:20 p.m. on the second floor of 55 Lenox Road. Around an hour later, firefighters found a 50-year-old man unconscious inside the building. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Another person was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, officials said.
Crews say more than 60 firefighters and EMS workers responded to the scene and had the fire under control in about an hour.
Video from the aftermath shows severe damage, walls covered in black soot, broken windows and fire marshals inspecting the charred interior.
One resident described the terrifying moment as thick smoke filled the hallways.
“It was very bad choking,” he told News 12. “I was talking badly. I kept saying to everybody, ‘Walk! Open the windows! Everybody get out of the building.’”
Timikia, a next door neighbor who was home at the time, is questioning the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.
"He didn't have any burns on him. His body wasn't on fire, but he had some blood on his forehead," said Timika.
Police were on the scene. FDNY fire marshals are investigating what caused the fire.
