A basement fire tore through a home in East New York on Thursday.
The fire broke out inside the home on New Jersey Avenue, between New Lots and Hegeman Avenues, just before 11 a.m.
A resident, who identified himself as Meech, said he smelled smoke while resting upstairs. When he ran downstairs, he said the basement was already engulfed.
Neighbors say they heard shouting and saw billowing smoke pouring from the house.
Everyone inside got out safely.
The family’s three dogs were also rescued, though one was taken to an emergency veterinarian for treatment for smoke inhalation.
The house suffered heavy damage. Crews worked through the afternoon to clear the debris, and fire marshals have opened an investigation into what caused the blaze.
