Fire tears through Bensonhurst building on 25th Avenue

A fire Friday afternoon tore through a Bensonhurst building at 86th Street and 25th Avenue. Officials say the fire broke out at around 3 p.m. in a second-story apartment above a hardware store.

A fire Friday afternoon tore through a Bensonhurst building at 86th Street and 25th Avenue.
Officials say the fire broke out at around 3 p.m. in a second-story apartment above a hardware store.
The residents of the apartment where the fire started were able to escape unharmed, but said they were upset by the loss of their possessions.
The residents in the other units were also able to get out unharmed, but were scrambling for a place to stay.
The Red Cross arrived on the scene to help four people who have become displaced.
The hardware store is also dealing with water damage caused by the response.
Fire officials say the flames were under control within an hour. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
