A fire tore through a building located at the Hunts Point Food Market Monday night, destroying at least three businesses and forcing firefighters to battle flames in the bitter cold.
More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene and did their job amid freezing temperatures and whipping winds. The fire broke out at a two-story building that housed several meat markets. Those markets supply food to businesses in the tri-state area.
Firefighters say the cold made their efforts more difficult. According to those on the scene, ice on the ground resulted in slick conditions.
Fire officials say three firefighters were hurt, but their injuries are reported as minor.
