Here’s what you need to know:
- A fire weather warning is in effect for today and through 6 p.m. Fires can spread easily and rapidly today due to the very low humidity, gusty winds, sunshine and dry ground.
- An air quality alert will likely be issued later today. Expect a hazy/smoky sky and smell in the air due to the nearby large wildfire in Passaic County, New Jersey/ Orange County, New York. The plumes of smoke are being carried by strong NW winds across the city.
- It’s chilly, clear and breezy this morning with temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. Haze is likely to develop throughout the day.
- Today will be much cooler with loads of sunshine and windy conditions. Highs are in the mid 50s.
- The coldest air of the season arrives tonight into Wednesday morning. Wake up wind chills are in the 20s and 30s. Highs will struggle to get to near 50 degrees on Wednesday. Fire danger is still expected to be elevated on Wednesday despite colder temperatures.
A series of cold fronts will move through our area this week bringing a cold blast of air, clouds and a gusty wind. Fire danger will remain low to moderate through Friday. Rain is still needed to help with our current drought and alleviate the fire danger concerns. We're currently at only 1.77 inches of rainfall so far for the fall season, with an additional 8-10 inches needed to put us out of the drought. Stay tuned for the latest drought monitor update this Thursday.
