Firefighters in Trenton had to brave the scorching summer heat while battling a large fire Wednesday afternoon.
News 12 New Jersey has learned that at least three firefighters were injured. One suffered from heat exhaustion and two were hurt when a portion of the ceiling collapsed.
The fire was reported at a two-story home on the corner of Cleveland Avenue.
Multiple firefighters were seen with wet towels wrapped around their necks and a fan spraying water on them. Temperatures reached the mid-90s in Trenton on Wednesday.
“So you’re going into a hot condition from a hotter condition. With the time-out gear on, of course your body temperature can raise, probably I don't know what the index is, probably close to 150-200 degrees. It’s very dangerous. The firefighters have to stay hydrated,” says Trenton Fire Director Kenneth Douglas.
Three people were inside the home when the fire started. They were able to get out safely.
The injured firefighters are all expected to recover.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
