? Brooklyn community leaders and union members sounded an alarm Thursday over firefighters? increased response times.
At a City Council hearing, they argued the closing of four local engines has led to citywide delays. The firefighters? union says it?s taking responders about 23 seconds longer to get to scenes. Fire officials counter that response times in the areas are still higher than others. Members also want money for a program that pairs fire marshals with police officers to investigate suspicious fires more effectively.
Firehouse 204 in Cobble Hill, 209 in Williamsburg, 212 in Greenpoint and 278 in Sunset Park were closed in 2003 as part of a citywide restructuring under Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC).
