Hempstead town officials say the Grand Slam for Heroes softball tournament was held to honor NYPD Detectives Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora, who were killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Harlem earlier this year.

The event raised money for families of police officers killed in the line of duty.

"We want the Riveras and the Moras and every other family that's suffering, either a line of duty injury or death, that we're here for them, we love them, we support them," says Austin Glickman, president of Law Enforcement Officers Weekend, one of the hosts of the tournament.

Glickman says he was inspired to start his organization after the murders of NYPD detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in 2014.

The tournament at Baldwin Park featured 12 local police teams, including the Nassau Police Department.

"We're one blue family," says James Rogers, NYPD softball team president. "We support each other no matter what and always will be there for each other."

Funds raised at the tournament will provide an all-expense paid trip to Miami for the Rivera and Mora families.
