Fisher House steps in to support military families in the Bronx

November is Military Family Appreciation Month, a time when families of armed services are recognized for supporting our servicemen and women. But what if they need support of their own? That's where Fisher House steps in.
It's a respite for Joan Lupinetti. The Virginia native has been at Fisher House for about two weeks while her husband Dorino, who served in the Navy for four years, recovers from lung surgery at James Peters VA Medical Center.
Fisher House Foundation has 92 homes around the country where military families can stay for free while their active duty or veteran loved ones receive medical care. Besides the comforts of home, Fisher House also provides close proximity to VA hospitals.
Many sites are located right on campus of most VA hospitals so families can visit their loved ones frequently.
There are seven families being housed at the Bronx location, but the 12,000-square foot home can accommodate much more families who need support far from home.
As for Lupinetti, she says the support from the staff and other military families have helped her through her husband's numerous medical procedures.
