Five high schools in Brooklyn are being added to the state?s list of those needing improvement.
The five schools failed to meet the minimum state performance requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act last year. The schools that were added to the list are the High School of Legal Studies, Acorn High School for Social Justice, South Brooklyn Community Leadership High School, Middle College High School at Medgar Evans and EBC for Public Service in Bushwick. Most of the schools failed due to low English composition Regents scores. Meanwhile, Midwood High School showed signs of improvement and was taken off the failing list.
Once a school is added to the failing list, the schools must develop a two-year improvement plan. If a Brooklyn school fails several years in a row, it may be shutdown. So far, eight schools have been shutdown in the city. Education officials say parents have the right to transfer children out of a failing school.
