Five people were taken to the hospital after an overnight fire inside an apartment building at the Van Dyke Houses in Brownsville.
According to the FDNY, crews were called to 431 Dumont Ave. around 1:32 a.m. Wednesday for reports of fire and smoke inside the three-story apartment building.
The fire started on the first floor and was brought under control just over thirty minutes later, according to the FDNY.
Five residents were taken to Brookdale Hospital with minor injuries. Officials say all are expected to be OK.
By sunrise, signs of the fire were still visible behind the building. Several windows had been boarded up, and charred items could be seen outside the building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The American Red Cross was also at the scene Wednesday morning, looking for anyone who may need help following the fire.
It is not yet clear whether how many families have been displaced or how many apartments have been affected.
