Flames shoot from grate during manhole blaze in Brighton Beach

Two manholes caught fire in Brighton Beach Sunday morning, sending flames shooting from a grate in the middle of the street, according to the FDNY and Con Edison.
Emergency crews responded to the underground blaze near 2912 Brighton 7th St. at around 10:30 a.m. A Con Ed spokesperson says the incident was not weather-related.
Citizen app video captured during the chaos shows the street sectioned off with caution tape as orange flames erupt from the grate and send smoke into the surrounding area.
According to the Con Ed outage map, ten residents briefly lost power. It has since been restored.
Con Ed says the fire was likely related to underground equipment failure.
No one was hurt during the blaze, according to the FDNY.
