Congregants are picking up the pieces after flames tore through a Bushwick church Wednesday.
About 25 units and more than 100 firefighters spent an hour and a half battling the flames that broke out before noon at the Mt. Paran Baptist Church on Broadway. The 15 volunteers inside at the time escaped unharmed.
The deputy chief says the main body of the blaze spread to the ceiling along the mezzanine.
The church has been temporarily closed due to fire and water damage.
Since the church serves hundreds of families weekly through its lunch program and food pantry, some worry about those who rely on the services.
"We can't distribute food on Thursday, which is disappointing," says pantry executive director Aprole Elliot. "We had people lined up."
On Sunday, the church group plans to meet at the Timothy Baptist Church on Jefferson Avenue.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
