Thursday marks the winter solstice, and while many New Yorkers dread the official start of winter and shortest day of the year, one group is celebrating the winter’s arrival.
Flatfoot Flatbush held a celebration in Park Slope along Flatbush Avenue where fiddlers, violinists, and traditional Appalachian dancers celebrated the official start of the winter season.
“It’s just bringing some energy and some music and light to enjoy on the shortest day of the year,” said Theodora Boguszewski, producer of Porch Stomp, a group of dancers partaking in the celebration. “I think this can be a tough time of year for folks and just getting everybody out into the street… it’s really great.”
