Fleet Week shows off Navy's 'green' initiatives
The arrival of Fleet Week means the public gets to check out what the Navy has to offer, including its efforts to be more environmentally friendly.
One of the ways the Navy is working to reduce its carbon footprint is by using alternative fuel.
Lt. Commander Paul Noel, of the U.S. Navy Reserve, says, "We take things like camelina seeds, which is kind of a mustard seed, and we press the oil out of the mustard seed and create a fuel mixture, and that can go in both the ship engines and on the planes."
Even while they're out to sea, officials say sailors are helping the environment by recycling plastics. They also strive to protect marine mammals when they are out at sea.
Not only do these efforts save money but they also help the Navy to keep moving full-steam ahead, officials say.
