The Food Bank for New York City is asking locals to try spending less than $31 on food for the next week, starting tomorrow. The Food Stamp Challenge, which runs May 11-17, is a campaign that aims to raise awareness about families that depend on food stamps. A congressional budget committee recently passed a proposal that would cut the food stamp program by more than $13 billion per year over the next decade. Currently, 22 percent of Brooklyn households rely on foods stamps, and for about 1 in 5 of those, it's the sole source of income to feed their families.
