September is Hunger Action Month and today Long Island residents can help those who are struggling to put food on the table.
PSEG Long Island, Island Harvest and Stop & Shop are asking Long Islanders, as they food shop for their families this Labor Day weekend to remember to donate.
From 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. the drive will be held in at the Stop & Shop parking lot on Jericho Turnpike in East Northport.
"It's very heartwarming, because people realize how difficult it's been especially with over the past year and a half with inflation with food prices going up and up," said PSEG's Marty Galety.
"Oh this feels great," added David Pruzan, Greenlawn. "I don't mind giving back. I could use some myself, but it's ok I don't mind giving."
Food collection bins and a drive-through option were set up and so residents could donate nonperishable items, household essentials, gift cards and cash donations. Those who donated cash provided two meals for families.
The initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 30,000 meals during July, August and September.
