Some Fordham residents plan to rally Sunday in favor of turning an abandoned library into a community center.
A local pastor and 150 people will march down Fordham Road to the busy shopping district. Nonprofit Community Action Unlimited is also joining the push for a community center.
The proposed center would have a computer lab and would consist of dance, leadership and ESL classes. Officials believe a lack of recreational activities for area children has caused an increase in violence.
March organizers say that the 27,000-square-foot library, owned by the New York Public Library, has stood vacant on Bainbridge Avenue for more than 20 months. They argue it could be better used.
