Some Brooklyn tenants, who paid their rent on time each month, could be kicked to the curb this Christmas as a result of the foreclosure crisis.
Elected officials say many renters in the city are not aware their homes have fallen into foreclosure. They say tenants could be evicted because the landlord and homeowners who rent their properties are the victims of foreclosure.
State Sen. Jeff Klein says more than 500 evictions will take place in New York City this month. He says as a result, hundreds of tenants could be innocent victims of the foreclosure crisis. Klein has proposed a bill that would force banks to give tenants a least 120 days before they must vacate a foreclosed home.
A 2008 study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition says nearly half of all foreclosures in New York will involve rental properties.
