A former World War I naval storehouse in Sunset Park, now known as Liberty Brooklyn, is touting thousands of new jobs across retail, manufacturing and office spaces - with more coming soon.
The building, once known as Storehouse 2, underwent extensive renovations in 2011 to become a modern facility.
Ian Siegel, property manager for Liberty Brooklyn, said the interior featured 21st-century infrastructure that blended historic architecture with contemporary design, with dozens of freight elevators to help load and ship goods, plus spaces for traditional offices.
Companies such as Kleinberg Electric and Liberty Pest Control chose the site over a traditional Manhattan space and were drawn by its larger footprint and historical significance.
“We were spread out across different buildings. Now it’s all under one house, which is so nice,” said Mark Miceli, of Liberty Pest Control.
Carol Kleinberg, founder of Kleinberg Electric, said the move held personal meaning.
“It feels great because I grew up in Brooklyn, and I remember when these buildings existed for other things, and then they became vacant for years,” she said. “So it was so nice to be here as part of revamping them and making them whole again.”
The rooftop featured gardens operated by Brooklyn Grange, which grew fresh produce for local families, hosted events and helped draw the public into the space.
Sam Murray, Brooklyn Grange director, said the site produced about 50,000 pounds of vegetables annually, helping provide access to fresh food for underserved communities.
"These green, protective spaces that bring food, help clean our air our so important to create throughout our borough," he said.
Developers say the complex has room for additional tenants and welcomed a range of industries.
“Farms, tech firms, offices — we are doing it all here at Liberty Brooklyn,” Siegel said. “Many of our clients have actually expanded and grown out of their original space.”
