A World Series champion with the New York Yankees is a step closer to serving in Congress this morning.

Mark Teixeira is celebrating a win in his primary race for a U.S. House seat in Texas. The former first baseman is running as a Republican in a district that typically votes red, making him the frontrunner heading into the general election.

President Donald Trump endorsed Teixeira during the campaign, calling him a “total winner on and off the field.”

Teixeira played five seasons with the Texas Rangers at the start of his career.
