The end of summer vacation is just a few days away for public school students, and a back-to-school giveaway in Bedford-Stuyvesant sought to help students make the transition.
The event commemorated Chris Owen, a 13-year-old Brooklyn teen who was shot and killed in 2009.
Chris Foye, the teen's father, started a foundation to honor Owen, and he says his mission is to end gun violence. He says he tries to do that by helping struggling families with their children's education in order to give them a better future.
Families received lunch, live entertainment and bags full of school supplies.
Foye says that during the school year, his foundation also hosts neighborhood sports tournaments, a vigil in honor of those who have died in gun violence, including his son, and a Christmas toy drive.
