An early morning fire Monday in Borough Park forced several families from their homes.
FDNY officials say the fire broke out around 2 a.m. inside a shoe store on the first floor of a three-story building at 3901 13th Ave. Flames and heavy smoke quickly spread through the building, leading to a third-alarm response with more than 130 firefighters and EMS personnel on scene.
Residents living above the store had to evacuate as thick smoke filled the apartments. Neighbor Bartolome Carmona told News 12 he woke up his children and rushed to safety after seeing the smoke.
Fire officials say the fire started in the rear of the shoe shop and was under control by around 4 a.m. No injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross is now helping four households – 15 adults and five children – by providing temporary lodging and emergency assistance.
The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
