A dessert company in Crown Heights is making new flavors of ice cream and popsicles to keep residents cool during the summer heat.
Island Pops co-owner Khalid Hamid says everything the shop does is based on memories and flavors and traditions in the Caribbean.
Khalid and his wife Shelly Marshall are both island people who grew up on the island of Trinidad and Tobago.
By day, Shelly works the store and at night, Khalid works the kitchen.
Their brand new store on Nostrand Avenue opened in July.
With flavors like Ovaltine, the ice creams and popsicles are sure to bring back good memories.
“You remember your grandfather, you remember your grandmother, churning coconut ice cream in the backyard,” says Shelly.
Right now their bestseller is the soursop ice cream.
“It's a naturally creamy fruit and it's something that we grew up on having a lot of in Trinidad and Tobago,” says Shelly.
As for the popsicles, well they've got a kick.
“It's blended between the sweetness of the mango and then we add some habaneros and some cilantro in there,” says Shelly.
They also feature a new take on a holiday tradition with their hibiscus team and cinnamon sorbet.
