Hundreds said their final goodbyes to former Island Park Fire Capt. Michael Fischer during a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church.
Fischer, 38, died last week while helping set up for a clam eating contest, which was raising money for a 7-month-old with cancer.
Fischer was a lifelong Island Park resident and a member of the Nassau County Department of Public Works.
He is survived by two sisters.
Fischer is the first firefighter to die in the line of duty in Island Park's history.
During Wednesday's wake ceremony, Fischer was posthumously promoted to honorary chief.
Fischer's final resting place is at Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale.
