It was an emotional goodbye Saturday for friends, family and colleagues of volunteer firefighter Jared Lloyd, who lost his life while saving others during a massive fire at a Rockland County assisted living facility last month.
Fire officials say Lloyd, 35, made multiple saves during the blaze at Evergreen Court Living Facility, but did not make it out. He was a father to two young boys and served with the Spring Valley Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years – joining after graduating high school.
"On March 23, after removing countless unconscious victims from the Evergreen Assisted Living Complex, Jared enter the building for a final time," said Mike Johnson, an ex-chief at the Columbian Fire Engine Company No.1 in Spring Valley.
Chief Ken Conjura called it “one of the worst fires Spring Valley has ever had, but with one of the greatest rescue efforts."
A resident at the assisted living facility was also killed in the fire. Officials have already started an investigation into the exact cause, but they say it will take a few more weeks.
Services took place at Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona on Saturday afternoon. It was followed by a procession to the firehouse and then to Brick Church Cemetery.

Hundreds of fellow firefighters from around the country attended the services. Hundreds more from the community paid their respects during the procession to the fire house for the ceremonial last call.
“Rest in peace my brother, we'll take it from here," said Chief Conjura.
