Family members of Eric Garner, joined by the Rev. Al Sharpton, met with officials from the U.S. Attorney's Office Thursday in Downtown Brooklyn in hope that federal prosecutors will take over the investigation.

Eric Garner, 43, died last month after he had been stopped by police for allegedly selling loose cigarettes in Staten Island. In a cellphone video of the incident, an officer is seen placing his arm around Garner's neck in an apparent chokehold.

Garner's family says they met with U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Loretta Lynch. They say the meeting went well, and they are hopeful that the case will be turned into a federal investigation.

Garner's death has been ruled a homicide and the Staten Island district attorney announced Tuesday that the case was going to a grand jury.

The officers involved have been placed on modified reassignment pending the outcome of the case. Sharpton, who is acting as a spokesperson for the family, says that is not enough.

The officials from the U.S. District Attorney's Office have not yet made a decision on the case.
