More than 100 families at the Seth Low Houses in Brownsville have gone without gas stoves to prepare their food for almost a week.

According to the New York Housing Authority, a gas leak was discovered inside the Belmont Avenue building and gas service was cut off to 144 units to remedy the problem. In a statement, NYCHA said, "there is no set time frame for return of service. We will work as safely as possible, that is the main concern."

Residents were given hot plates Monday as a temporary option for cooking. Aaron Hinton, who lives in the building, says he heard the gas may be turned off for the next four months, which would mean using hot plates to cook holiday meals.
