A Gerritsen Beach couple devastated by Hurricane Sandy says that amid the chaos and flooding, a message from heaven has them believing everything will turn out OK.
Maria and Georg Velsor say they almost drowned as 6 feet of water filled up to their basement ceiling during the storm. They say that despite the water, a statue of the Virgin Mary that sits on top of a water heater did not budge, and they're taking it as a sign.
The couple suffered more than $50,000 in damages and remains without electricity or water. They say they were told most of the damage won't be covered even though they have flooding insurance.
