There will soon be more help coming to Bridgeport to help homeless veterans get jobs.

Heather Marquis, a worker at Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut, says while she didn't serve in the military herself, she has veterans in her family and holds their service in the highest possible regard.

"We are here, our freedom, our way of life is because somebody made the choice to serve this country," said Marquis.

That deep reverence for people who have served is a fundamental part of the culture at Goodwill, according to Marquis, from the stores to the services offered by the nonprofit.

She was thrilled when she learned they were getting a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor for the better part of $500,000 over the next three years to help homeless veterans get jobs.

News 12 Connecticut did a story in 2015 on Russell Billingslea. The Bridgeport veteran was homeless until the story helped him get housing. He's lived at Crescent Crossing ever since. Goodwill also helps veterans find jobs.

"If you get a job, you can pay rent, you can take care of yourself, you can have some sense of accountability and sustainability in your life," said Billingslea.

As Goodwill gets ready to find and help as many homeless veterans as possible, Marquis wants them to know that they are never alone.

"There are options for them, that there is help, that there is support and that there are people who understand what they're going through," said Marquis.
