Election Day is only a few weeks away, and News 12 New Jersey is highlighting some of the congressional races this year.

The 5th Congressional District is in the northern part of the Garden State and encompasses towns such as Alpine, Andover, Fort Lee and Vernon. The race is between incumbent Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer and Republican Frank Pallotta.

News 12 caught up with Gottheimer at an official event with the Teaneck Fire Department. Gottheimer unveiled new federal funding for responders.

“We must fund, not defund law enforcement,” the congressman said. “When we get money back from Washington that doesn't hit our property tax line, it makes life more affordable.”

This is the second time that Pallotta has challenged Gottheimer. He lost in the 2020 election by 7.5 points.

“In the private sector you have to learn to work with others or you fail. You get fired, you move on. I spent 28 years in Wall Street because I know how to work with others,” Pallotta said.

He says the main issues he's running on are the economy, crime, education issues and immigration.

“Like most districts in New Jersey, this is a moderate district. The country's a moderate country,” Pallotta said. “I supported the overturning of Roe v. Wade. I would not support the federal ban on abortion, in any form. I think we should leave it up to the state.”

Gottheimer said he is working to get more money back into New Jersey taxpayers’ pockets.

“Prescription drugs, getting energy prices down, clawing more money back from Washington, dealing with supply chain issues,” he said. “That's truly a win-win for the taxpayers, and we only do it by working together.”

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
