Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and city and state officials are continuing to warn people not to gather in groups.
As of Sunday, News 12 is told 30 people have died statewide due to COVID-19.
Thanksgiving is just three days away, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo is hoping the COVID-19 infection rate won’t rise. If it does, New York City will be going back to stricter guidelines.
For now, the state is limiting private gatherings to 10 people even in private dwellings like homes and apartments as the holiday season begins.
"Let it go up, the rate goes up, there are more restrictions to slow the economy, that's bad for business, rates go up, you overburden the hospital system, you overburden doctors, nurses, you can have possible equipment supplies, numbers go up, people die,” says Gov. Cuomo.
Even though New York has the fourth lowest infection rate in the country currently, Gov. Cuomo says cases are creeping up. He has now added neighborhoods like University Heights, Highbridge, Morris Heights, Fordham Heights and Mott Haven in the Bronx as precautionary yellow zones because of an increase of positivity rates. As is parts of Gravesend and Midwood in Brooklyn.
Gov. Cuomo is asking New Yorkers to continue to follow the rules and claiming micro-clusters work.
What this means is those areas must have limited capacity in houses of worship, gatherings with a limit and limitations to indoor and outdoor dining.
Even though statewide, New York’s numbers are better compared to most of the nation, the governor warns the holidays could change that if we don't follow the guidelines.
