Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday said she is proposing a change in education for teachers.

Hochul’s $10 million “Back to Basics Reading Plan” would retrain teachers in the science of reading. The plan would involve teaching kids to sound out words, decode them and understand their meaning, as well as help expand their vocabulary.

"I'm looking at a room full of young people that represent young people all over New York and you are the future of our state,” Hochul said. “And I want to make sure that you have the best tools and advantages of anybody so you can be as successful as you want to be."

This proposal from Hochul comes ahead of her upcoming State of the State address.
