Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation Friday that aims to prevent traffic fatalities and crack down on hit-and-runs.
The legislation would allow municipalities to bring speed limits down to 25 mph and increase fines for leaving the scene of an accident from $750 to $1,000.
Under current law, the default maximum speed limit throughout the city, town or village can't be set lower than 30 mph.
The new measure comes after a 16-year-old Stepinac High School student was killed last week in a hit-and-run.
