Gov. Kathy Hochul was in Newburgh Wednesday for a special Black History Month event, memorializing the injustices against two Black men who were lynched in the 1800s in Orange County.

The plaques honor Robert Mullinar from Newburgh and Robert Lewis from Port Jervis.

Both men were lynched in their hometowns by angry mobs after they were accused, but never found guilty, of raping white women.

"From this day forward, people will know their names. People will read about them and know this is a part of the history that we have turned a blind eye into to too long. When we talk about that, because you have to talk about it, and we'll say - we will stare that down to say that it never ever happens again in our society. That we stand up for everyone," said Hochul.

Hochul says the plaques will make sure no one forgets their stories or their painful part of Black history.
