A group of artists in Gowanus is being forced to vacate their studios during the coronavirus pandemic.
Shortly after the lockdown began, 28 artists were told they needed to permanently move out of their studios at 540 President St. by May 25.
Spaceworks, which provides space for artists, is going out of business and is terminating its lease with the building's owners PDS Development Corp.
Art Gowanus is trying to help advocate for the artists who are afraid to move during the pandemic and are losing their work space.
They say they tried to negotiate with the landlord and the landlord was unwilling. The artists are worried what it will do to their community and their need for affordable space.
News 12 reached out to PDS Development Corp. and was directed to Spaceworks. Spaceworks said the May deadline was pushed 30 days after New York Pause currently ends. It says it will not remove an artists' belongings from the space.
The artists plan to meet with councilmembers and attorneys about their rights during the eviction moratorium.
