A grand jury will decide Thursday whether to indict former NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik for tax evasion and other charges.
Kerik allegedly let a mob-connected business seeking city contracts renovate his Bronx apartment for $240,000 in 1999.
Last year, Kerik pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge that he took $165,000 in gifts from the construction firm. The deal kept him out of prison and allowed him to continue working as a security consultant.
Under presidential hopeful and then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Kerik rose from police detective to city correction commissioner to top cop. In 2004, Giuliani endorsed Kerik to head the Department of Homeland Security. Days after President Bush nominated him, Kerik withdrew his name due to tax issues involving his former nanny.
