Gravesend Park is getting a multimillion-dollar renovation aimed at giving children in the area more space to play.
Councilman David Greenfield helped shovel dirt Thursday in the park he once played in as a child.
"I used to stand over here waiting for swings that were never available because there wasn't enough swings and there wasn't enough playgrounds," Greenfield says.
The city is giving Gravesend Park a $5 million renovation that will include four new playgrounds, two new swingsets, new basketball courts, new handball courts, seating areas and lighting.
Maria Schmitt, who usually brings her grandchildren to the park, says she can't wait to bring them to play on the new playgrounds.
The renovation work is expected to be completed within the next 18 months.
