Seniors at the Greene Clermont Houses are finally seeing the upgrades they’ve been hoping for - after a year of waiting.
For Dorel Anderson, who’s lived with a disability her whole life, says it's hard to put into words how much this means.
She’s lived in three different buildings over the years, but this is the first time she’s had an apartment that truly feels like home.
Anderson knows these upgrades go beyond new paint or flooring. She can now cook, shower and even turn off the lights all by herself.
It's something she hasn’t been able to do before. She says it’s given her back a sense of independence and peace. Residents say the renovations have completely changed the atmosphere in the building.
The hallways are brighter, the apartments are safer and for the first time in years, people say they feel like they are truly being heard.
The renovations at Greene Clermont Houses were led by Tredway, an affordable and mixed-income housing developer, along with ELH Management LLC, Council Member Crystal Hudson and the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
The project preserved 97 affordable senior homes and brought long-overdue upgrades, including new kitchens, updated bathrooms, brighter hallways and safer living spaces for residents who have called this building home for decades.
This is the first major overhaul of the seven-story building in more than 40 years, and it’s already making a difference.
Phase 1 focused on apartment upgrades and interior improvements. Next, Phase 2 will bring new support services designed to help seniors live comfortably and independently. Plans include a resident services coordinator, a gym, food programs and on-site health care.
